There's a lot to update over the past month. My mom came for the Christmas holiday which was the stimulus for much of the activity around my house. I had a roman shade kit that I'd bought at JoAnn Fabrics, and was saving for her visit hoping she could help me make it. Then after Christmas I got a serger to go along with the sewing machine I got last year.

Mind you, I haven't sewed a whole lot since my kids grew up. I've been very busy with knitting, weaving, spinning, dyeing, etc. thank you! But actually, since Jada arrived, I have made a few things for her and for Theresa to use with her (like the baby sling for instance). But I have wanted a serger because I thought it would be useful for when I sew handwoven fabric.

Anyway, we bought fabric for the blinds and went at it. There were measuring snafu's because my window is bigger than the one the blinds kit is for. We forged on anyway, with patching and piecing of fabric to make it work. We had to go back and get more lining fabric at one point. And also more of the blinds main fabric too. Oy! Then we had the lady at Lowes cut the wooden "batten" too short, so we had to go get another one. And then we had to get special hardware to fit the window and hold up the batten. (though we eventually didn't use it, we just hung it on the old roll up shades holders)

And after about a week of struggle, sweat, and late nights sewing and serging, we had it finished. And it looks really great! And truly it wasn't all that hard. Though if you count up the time it took to make it and the cost of materials, we could have had custom blinds made by someone else cheaper probably. But WE MADE THEM!! Wow!
